An unexpected event…

I did not share a detail from last week Friday, I needed some time to reflect and process the events. Last Friday we organized the different Items sent on the sea container and separated them into two piles: one to go to the parish of Riviere Mancell, and one to the parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This was a big job and we only accomplished it with help from many people, however, I had to initially handle each box so that I could read the label so we could decide where it should go. This was done fairly quickly …

Life in the slow lane, going very, very fast….

I have been back in Haiti for 11 days now for a very short trip; 11 more to go. This trip I am traveling alone because Denise is in recovery from her recent cancer surgery. She went to our family doctor on Friday because she felt a respiratory infection coming on. He diagnosed it as bronchitis and is treating it with anti-biotic. All is well. This is the first time she has seen him since the surgery. He told her he had been constantly updated on her condition and told her that the type of cancer she had was “small …

Earthquake update

Earthquake report: Sunday afternoon there was an aftershock of 5.2 magnitudes. It did not cause additional loss of life or significant additional damage. It has taken several days for information to come down from the mountains. The good news is that there was no loss of life in the countryside. Most all of the block and mortar buildings have been compromised. We will not know the extent until we can do an on-site evaluation. The photos I have seen show stress cracks as well as some crumbling of stucco. Our apartment is intact, but it has shifted enough that the …

Earthquake in northern Haiti

I am sure that most of you have heard about the 5.9 earthquake that hit northern Haiti last night. It greatly impacted the area where we live and work. Denise and I are still in the United States as Denise recovers from her cancer surgery. She is recovering and I am planning on returning before the end of the month. According to texts we received through the night, the earthquake caused considerable damage in Gros Morne. The second story of St. Gabriels school, a catholic grades school, collapsed along with a public auditorium. First reports are one dead from that …

Medical emergency… and a miracle!

Dear friends, We normally would have blogged by now, we were scheduled to return to Haiti on September 6th. However, we had to postpone our fall move to Haiti. A week before we were to leave, on Thursday, August 30th, Denise experienced an emergency medical situation… and a miracle! While Denise was driving her and I, to our daughter Haley’s house, she lost sight in her right eye. We were meeting Haley to go with her to see the ultra-sound of the newest addition to the Snyder Clan. I took over driving and when we arrived at the hospital for …

Rocket Stove Update

On his last several trips to Haiti, our engineer, Bob Fairchild, has been building new and improved versions of the school rocket stove. These have a high-temperature stainless steel firebox liner with insulating firebrick and an insulated skirt with stainless steel lining. We are now using imported pots as the cylindrical shape greatly simplifies the construction of the skirt – a crucial component for optimum efficiency. This has included a 40-quart version for the Father Jim Bretl Agricultural Center and two 20 quart versions for Sister Pat and Sister Jackie’s preschool at Chacho (one stove for rice, the other for …

Please pray for peace…

The following is from a post by our good friend Antia Martin. The last paragraph is her response to my asking her permission to share with you all. Her husband Elwood is in the US an cannot return because the airport is closed. I have spent the day praising God for safety & the prompting of the Holy Spirit! As many of you have heard & seen, Haiti erupted in violence yesterday (Friday) as the government announced a very major fuel hike. We had went to Port Wednesday, as Elwood was flying to the States for a family reunion. I …
