Another wonderful blog by Sarah Joy. I highly recommend!

Great Haiti Adventure: Day 9 January 16, 2019 | Sarah Joy 11/13/19 Up early for the brand new market in Buchan Richard. Not as early as tomorrow’s drive to Port au Prince, but I’ll write about that then. We get fresh coffee about every 4 days and this morning was one of those times. I prefer the flavor of my coffee at home, but I definitely appreciate the coffee here. The ladies literally roast the beans over an open flame and then use something like a mortar and pestle to grind them. Then they boil the grounds in water before …

Great Haiti Adventure: Day 7, another day through the eyes of Sarah Joy

Sarah Joy 11/11/18 It is Sunday. My body has continued to ache so I made my way to the rooftop for some yoga. A few people stopped to watch from the footpaths; in this country where people need to conserve every possible calorie, I must look like quite an oddity. I was a tiny bit embarrassed, but I felt so much better afterward. After I was finished one of the young men in the village brought fresh coconuts to Dad and me. He sliced 2 open so that we could drink the fresh coconut water. Yet again I am touched …

Wrapping up 2018

Merry Christmas Everyone! This year has been full of changes. The parish of Riviere Mancell finally split into two parishes. The new parish, Our Lady of Guadalupe, is flourishing under the leadership of Fr. Dachemy. In the middle of August, Fr. Gracia, parish priest of Riviere Mancelle, was replaced by Fr. Janin. This new dynamic is creating an opportunity to evaluate past projects and relationships and move forward with the benefit of lessons learned from those experiences. In September Denise was diagnosed with lung cancer. She had the upper lobe of her right lung removed with 100% of the cancer. …

Great Haiti Adventure: Day 5

By Sarah Joy 11/9/18 A later start, but a later finish today. It’s almost 9 p.m. and I’m only now sitting down to write. Typically I’m working on my blog at around 5. It’s been a full and good and productive day! We had our breakfast of bouillon and an egg. And I may have snuck in a little bit of avocado! Then we headed out for a day of meetings. By day of meetings, I mean 2 meetings, but they took the entire day. The Haiti Project has supported one parish for years. One parish = one priest to …

Great Haiti Adventure: Day 3

December 5, 2018 Sarah Joy 11/7/18 I woke up completely rested this morning. I slept about 9.5 hours, which I haven’t done since before I left my ex. Last night I sprayed myself with Off, opened my window and crawled into bed before 9. And I woke this morning to the sounds of a rooster crowing. Crushing that “what if” around not being able to sleep in Haiti! That was a little less than 12 hours ago. And I’m exhausted again! But I’m happy. After a breakfast of bouillon (brothy, salty soup of potatoes and carrots) and a hard boiled …

Having Time to Reflect

Having time to reflect November 26, 2018 Many of you already know about my bout with cancer this fall that prevented me from going to Haiti as planned in September. I am recovering from having the upper lobe of my right lung removed. I get tired faster than before and can get out of breath but for the most part am recovering very well. Each week I feel stronger. Bob went to Haiti one month after my surgery; I was not strong enough to make the trip. I have not lived alone for three weeks maybe ever. It gave me …

Great Haiti Adventure: Day One

Great Haiti Adventure: Day One November 21, 2018 | Sarah Joy For the next few months, I will be sharing the daily posts I wrote while in Haiti. 11 days, 11 posts. 11/5/18 I made it through several of the what ifs today. I didn’t miss my flight. I remembered my passport. My luggage arrived on time. My phone works! My flight was scheduled for around 8 a.m. When I got through security and headed toward my gate, I discovered my flight was delayed due to weather in Atlanta. Uh oh. This could very well mean a missed connection for …

What Happened to All Those What Ifs?

What Happened to All Those What Ifs? November 16, 2018 | Sarah Joy Now that I’m back from Haiti, I REALLY want to review my list of what ifs. I didn’t look at it again after I posted it, and I’m excited to reread it. I know that some, really most, of my fears were totally BS. I’m excited to find that, once again, my life is unfolding according to a bigger plan. Worrying is just a waste of my heart energy. So, I’m gonna jump right in. One by one, let’s see what really happened…. What if I miss …
