I am sure that most of you have heard about the 5.9 earthquake that hit northern Haiti last night. It greatly impacted the area where we live and work. Dear friends, We normally would have blogged by now, we were scheduled to return to Haiti on September 6th. However, we had to postpone our fall move to Haiti. A week before we were to leave, on Thursday, August 30th, Denise experienced an emergency medical situation… and a miracle! While Denise was driving her and I, to our daughter Haley’s house, she lost sight in her right eye. Bob and Denise Snyder, Lay Salvatorians, and co-founders of The Haiti Project, will be visiting St Mary of the Visitation, Huntsville Alabama, August 4th and 5th to give an update on the progress of their work in Haiti. After mass, they will be available for questions and conversation. They will be displaying and selling Haitian tin art, sculpture, paintings and other handmade crafts brought back from their most recent trip to Haiti.

On his last several trips to Haiti, our engineer, Bob Fairchild, has been building new and improved versions of the school rocket stove. These have a high-temperature stainless steel firebox liner with insulating firebrick and an insulated skirt with stainless steel lining. We are now using imported pots as the cylindrical shape greatly simplifies the construction of the skirt – a crucial component for optimum efficiency.
