    1. Considering that during Mexico’s presidential election July 1st 100 people were killed, the recent civil unrest in Haiti does well by comparison. To my knowledge looters in Port-au-Prince were not killed by the Haitian police which should help restore order since the fuel hike has been rescinded, for now at least. and the government has so far placed human lives or at least political wisdom above the protection of private property at whatever cost. But, in order to please those for whom property is the greater value, the threat to kill looters in the future was made without having yet been carried through, at least not to my knowledge. I think the government must be lauded for its recent restraint and encouraged to not let the interests of property change things so that thanks to official violence the requisites of the World Bank can be more easily satisfied. Just as following the earthquake there was not sufficient disorder to warrant a military semi-occupation, nor now does Haiti need a radically tougher police force. The Haitian government having arrived after decades of unwarranted brutality aided by outside interests should be encouraged to put responsibility toward its people and their culture above the demands of the international lenders for greatly increased austerity backed up by a greater police force. And who can fail to imagine that that is among things now being considered?

Haiti is still a basically peaceful country thanks to the advancement made in that direction by her African ancestors. She can still for many good reasons look to herself with pride during the long night of poverty which the international financial community has yet to understand let alone hasten towards its end.

And let this also be a time for more people to consider joining The Haiti Project and like projects, the happy few who know very well why they have chosen Haiti.
And who remain undaunted by this tempest in a teapot….in the greater scheme of things.

Of course if things get worse here I sit with egg on my face. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
