As of this writing on Thanksgiving Day, political and civil crises engulf Haiti. While the daily paralysis of the country has lifted slightly, armed and violent gangs operating with impunity still hold the countryside hostage. And… powerful opposing political factions are calling for renewed protests.

During this dangerous and dark time, The Haiti Project is working with a core group of Priests, Sisters, volunteers, and missionaries that remain in Haiti, to continue serving the poorest of the poor. These faithful work silently, under the radar, to escape attention from those who believe that the only solution to the terrible excesses of the ruling class is to call attention to their cause by oppressing their own most vulnerable citizens.

Even though our schools are only able to open occasionally, we are still paying the teachers and serving food for the children when possible. Inflation is running rampant and our sources of funding are inadequate for the need. Each dollar is being stretched as far as possible, but still leaves some critical needs unmet. Last year at this time it cost us 25 U.S. cents per meal to feed a child, now it is 35 U.S. cents. The teachers are also finding their wages buying power reduced by inflation, and we will need more money to pay the teachers hen school is extended into July to make up for the lost time.

Your gift now will mean more money for the teachers and insure the children eat every day possible.

With six schools, we are paying the salaries of 47 teachers and feeding almost 1,300 meals a day when schools are open.

The salaries for the teachers are especially critical during this time when the economy of Haiti has come to a standstill. Teaching is one of the few jobs remaining, and of the few jobs that remain, many are unfilled because few can afford transportation; the price of gas is $16 U.S. a gallon. The spending and re-spending of the money from the teachers’ salaries positively impacts the local economy.
